William Hull

American General
1753-1825

William HullA veteran of the American War of Independence, William Hull was thought to be courageous and reliable.

He was Governor of the Michigan area and, in 1812, was dragooned into taking over the military operations in his territory.

He was persuaded to invade upper Canada but that military operation was almost over before it began and - in the face of a very small British force under Sir Isaac Brock - surrendered Detroit without a shot.

He defended his actions by saying it had saved the lives of the citizens of Detroit.

He was allowed to return to America where he was court martialled and sentenced to be executed by firing squad.

He received a presidential pardon and was allowed to retire.
